European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
